What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu is an ancient Japanese healing therapy following similar principles to acupuncture which works on a system of energy channels or ‘meridians’, each meridian connecting with an organ. The pressure is applied by using thumbs, palms and elbows. Knees and feet can also be used in the treatments. There are also gentle stretching techniques to stimulate the meridians and rebalance energy, (‘Ki’ in Japanese) in order to promoter good health. Physically this has the effect of stimulating the circulation and flow of lymphatic fluid, working on both divisions of the autonomic nervous system, helping to release toxins and deep seated tension from the muscles and stimulating the hormone system. After an initial consultation, the treatment should always be carried out on a ‘futon’ mat on the floor. However, where certain conditions make this difficult, e.g., in poor health, injuries or for the elderly, patients can be treated in a chair or accordingly using adapted gentle techniques. Below is a list of a few of the ailments that can be aided by Shiatsu therapy; the therapists are always pleased to discuss any particular condition:
1 - Arthritis and rheumatism
